WHAT WE DO

The Orchestra

Director : Paul Wright

Paul Wright has established a diverse career as a performer, arranger, composer, and educator. Graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in 1999 he began his performing career as a trombone player in the orchestra on board the QE2.

Moving to London in 2002 Paul worked extensively on over forty West End and touring musicals, in addition to appearing in house bands and as a guest on primetime BBC television shows including Strictly Come Dancing

The Wind Symphony

Director : Jim Kulpa

The Wind Symphony was established in 2008 to cater for the growing number of brass and woodwind players who could not be accommodated in the Orchestra.

Under the direction of Sanford Jones, the Wind Symphony grew in membership and expanded its repertoire of Wind Band literature. A significant milestone was the performance of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” together with pianist Mert Esen. This was Sanford’s farewell concert.

Our History

The Doha Community Music Ensembles was founded in October 2005. At that time lessons were available on some instruments in Doha, but there was no opportunity for players to get together in an ensemble. Two music teachers, Kathy Stuart and Lesley McBright, decided to see if the gap could be filled. The vision was to build a full symphony orchestra for the whole community, adults and children, and they started by recruiting string players. Ten young violin and cello players attended the first rehearsal at Doha College, conducted by Kathy, with Lesley accompanying on piano. Gradually more string players joined and with the addition of wind players some six months later, the DCME had already outgrown the rehearsal room at Doha College.
